Thelma Garcia
I earned my B.S. in Neuroscience with a Biology Concentration from UTEP in 2025 and am currently pursuing a Master of Arts in Leadership Studies with a Public Administration Concentration at UTEP. My future goal is to attend medical school and become a physician who provides patient-centered care by meeting patients where they are, understanding their individual circumstances, and serving them with humility.
My Story
As a first-generation and nontraditional student, mother of two preteen boys, and former Certified Surgical Technologist (CST®), my path to medicine has been anything but linear. Each chapter of my journey has shaped who I am today. Through patient care, undergraduate research, and community service involvement, I have developed a strong passion for serving others and advocating for underserved communities and populations.
Born and raised in El Paso, I am proud to call this community home. El Paso has shaped my journey and inspired me to keep growing with purpose. I hope to continue serving the community that has given me so much by contributing to the well-being of its residents and helping create a positive impact for future generations.
I have been a member of the Collegiate Double T Health Professions Honor Society since 2023. And it is an honor for me to serve as the Collegiate Double T Historian for the 2026–2027 academic year. In this role, I look forward to highlighting our members’ achievements, service, and impact while helping share the mission of our honor society with the community.
Outside of academics and leadership, I enjoy spending time with my family, volunteering, mentoring future healthcare professionals, and making memories with my Goldendoodle, Lila.
