Christina A. Valtierra

I am a senior at UTEP doing a dual-degree in Cellular and Molecular Biochemistry alongside Computer Science. After graduation, I hope to work as a research technician in an immunology lab, and afterwards join an MD-PhD program to become a physician-scientist. I hope to bring CS and Biochemistry together to develop better therapeutic strategies for patient with autoimmune and chronic conditions!

My Story

I grew up in Juárez, México, where I did all of my education up until high school. My experiences have always been shaped by growing up in the border, where I constantly saw a connection between the cultures of two countries. Coming to the U.S. as the first in my immediate family in the medical field, my experience has been shaped by challenges unique to my community and the people around me. My time with Double T started in 2024, and although short, it has brought me exposure to the clinical setting outside of what I knew in the past. It has allowed me to connect with other passionate and resilient students, which fuels me to continue working towards my goals. I am very excited to work as Webmaster this year, where I can hopefully help in showcasing all the amazing work our members do. In the future, I hope to be in an MD-PhD program that encourages me to attend to underserved communities, while also dedicating my time to research in chronic illnesses as an immunologist.

My advice to current members is to never think it is too late to work towards your goals, and to enjoy the process! It will be a very challenging experience but also extremely rewarding. Do not hesitate to ask for help and always apply to everything, you never know who will say yes.
